Lip Flip vs Lip Filler in Boca Raton: Cost, Results and Which to Choose

A lip flip and lip filler do different jobs. A lip flip uses a wrinkle relaxer to relax the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward. Lip filler adds hyaluronic acid volume and shape. At Sol Luna Aesthetics in Boca Raton, a Lip Flip is listed at $200 and Sol Signature Lips at $750.

People often ask for "a little more lip" without knowing which treatment fits. This guide from Sophie Lanter, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, a doctorally prepared, board-certified family nurse practitioner and the founder of Sol Luna Aesthetics, compares the two side by side so you can walk into your consultation with clear questions. A DNP is a doctoral degree in nursing, not a medical (MD or DO) degree.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a wrinkle relaxer treatment, not a filler. Small doses of a neurotoxin are placed in the muscle that circles the mouth (the orbicularis oris), near the upper lip line. As the muscle relaxes, the upper lip can roll out a little, so more of the pink part shows when you smile.

Sol Luna's wrinkle relaxer menu describes the Lip Flip as a way to get "a fuller, more defined upper lip without filler." It is listed at $200 with a 15 minute appointment. A lip flip does not add volume. It changes how the lip you already have sits and moves.

Using a wrinkle relaxer around the mouth is an off-label use: the FDA label for Botox Cosmetic lists its cosmetic uses as frown lines, crow's feet, forehead lines and neck (platysma) bands.

What is lip filler?

Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel injected into and around the lips to add volume, define the border and improve symmetry. HA is a substance your body makes naturally, and it attracts water, which is why filler can also make lips look more hydrated.

At Sol Luna Aesthetics, all filler treatments are performed by Sophie. The lip filler page lists Sol Signature Lips at $750, an appointment of about one hour, and an injection time of about 15 to 30 minutes. The same page notes that most first-time patients start with 0.5 to 1 syringe for a natural result, with more added at a follow-up visit if wanted.

Who is a good fit for each treatment?

A lip flip may suit you if:

  • Your upper lip seems to disappear or thin out when you smile

  • You want a subtle change and are not ready for filler

  • You are comfortable with a shorter lasting result

Lip filler may suit you if:

  • You want more volume in the upper lip, lower lip or both

  • You want to improve the shape of the border or the balance between the lips

  • You want a result that typically lasts longer between visits

Neither treatment is right for everyone. Your lip anatomy, smile, teeth and the rest of your face all shape the plan, which is why Sol Luna approaches lips as part of facial balancing rather than in isolation. If fine vertical lines around the mouth are the main concern, the filler menu also lists Perioral Airbrushing at $700.

Can you combine a lip flip and lip filler?

Some people ask about having both, since one changes how the lip moves and the other adds volume. Whether combining them makes sense for your lips, and in what order, is decided at your consultation. Sol Luna's FAQ notes that many clients combine lip filler with wrinkle relaxers or other treatments as part of a custom plan.

What are the risks of a lip flip and lip filler?

Both are medical procedures with risks. Results vary from person to person.

Lip flip. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) notes in its guide to lip augmentation options that a lip flip can lead to some weakness around the mouth, such as when smiling or drinking from a straw. Other possible effects include bruising, tenderness and an uneven result. Botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning about the effect spreading beyond the injection site; get medical help right away for any trouble swallowing, breathing or speaking.

Lip filler. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common and usually fade within days. Less common risks include lumps, asymmetry, filler moving from where it was placed and infection. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel. The FDA advises immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin that turns white or blue, any change in vision or signs of a stroke after filler.

If you are unhappy with past lip filler, Sol Luna offers Spring Cleaning (Filler Dissolve + Reset). Read Filler Dissolving in Boca Raton to learn how it works.

How do you prepare, and what is aftercare like?

Sol Luna's lip filler page lists these steps for the 24 to 48 hours before treatment:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil unless prescribed by your physician, to lower bruising risk

  • Skip alcohol for at least 24 hours

  • Stay hydrated and eat a light meal

  • Avoid peels, waxing or other facial treatments close to your appointment

After lip filler, the page advises a clean, wrapped cold compress, no touching or massaging the lips for 24 hours, staying upright for 4 to 6 hours, no strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours, avoiding saunas, hot tubs and sun for 48 hours, and waiting 24 hours before lipstick or lip balm. Aftercare for a lip flip is reviewed at your appointment.
