Botox for Excessive Sweating in Boca Raton: Underarms, Cost and How Long It Lasts
Botox for sweating in Boca Raton is offered at Sol Luna Aesthetics as "Tox for sweating," listed at $1,000 for a 30 minute appointment. Injections into the skin temporarily reduce sweat where they are placed. Sol Luna notes results typically begin in 3 to 7 days, peak within 2 weeks and last about 4 to 9 months.
Heavy sweating that soaks through shirts or makes it hard to hold a pen is a medical condition called hyperhidrosis, and botulinum toxin is one of several treatments for it. This guide from Sophie Lanter, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, a doctorally prepared, board-certified family nurse practitioner and the founder of Sol Luna Aesthetics, explains who it may suit, what the visit involves and the risks to weigh. A DNP is a doctoral degree in nursing, not a medical (MD or DO) degree.
What is hyperhidrosis, and when is sweating "excessive"?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes hyperhidrosis as a treatable medical condition in which people sweat more than the body needs to cool itself. There are two types:
Primary hyperhidrosis is the most common. Sweating is focused in one or two areas, such as the underarms, palms, soles or head, and people are usually otherwise healthy.
Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by a medicine or another medical condition. The AAD lists diabetes, Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, heart failure, stroke and menopause among the conditions that can cause it, and notes that, unlike primary hyperhidrosis, it can cause sweating during sleep.
According to the AAD, primary hyperhidrosis is diagnosed when excessive sweating has lasted more than 6 months along with at least two other signs, such as sweating more than once a week, sweating that affects everyday activities, sweating that stops during sleep or a blood relative with the same problem.
How does Botox reduce sweating?
When used for wrinkles, botulinum toxin relaxes a muscle. For sweating, it is injected into the skin, where it temporarily reduces the amount of sweat in the treated area. The AAD explains that for underarm sweating the injections go directly into the skin of the underarm.
The FDA prescribing information for BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) approves it for severe primary underarm sweating that is not well controlled with topical products, at a recommended 50 Units per underarm. The same label states that safety and effectiveness for sweating in other body areas have not been established. Sol Luna's booking menu describes Tox for sweating as targeting areas such as the underarms, hands, feet and scalp; treatment outside the underarms is an off-label use that Sophie will discuss with you.

When do results start, and how long do they last?
The figures below come from Sol Luna's booking menu, the AAD's hyperhidrosis treatment guide and the FDA label.
Source | When sweating usually decreases | How long results usually last |
Sol Luna booking menu | Begins within 3 to 7 days, with maximum improvement within 2 weeks | About 4 to 9 months, depending on the area and the person |
AAD | Most patients notice less sweating within 7 to 10 days | Underarms or hands: 3 to 10 months; feet: 3 to 6 months; face: about 4 1/2 months |

Who is a good candidate for Botox for sweating?
Botox for sweating may be worth discussing if:
Sweating in one or two areas has bothered you for months and affects work, clothing or daily tasks.
You have tried antiperspirants, including prescription strength options, without enough relief. The FDA approval for underarm sweating applies when topical products have not worked well enough.
You are an adult. The BOTOX label states safety and effectiveness for underarm sweating have not been established in patients under 18.
It may not be the right first step if your sweating started suddenly, happens at night or affects your whole body. The FDA label says patients should be checked for causes of secondary hyperhidrosis, such as an overactive thyroid, so the underlying condition is not missed. If that applies to you, an evaluation by your primary care provider may be the right first step.
What happens at a Botox for sweating appointment?
Your first visit starts with a $125 consultation. Sophie will review your medical history, medicines and how long you have had heavy sweating, then confirm whether treatment is appropriate. Before the visit, the AAD advises that it is essential to stop aspirin, some other anti-inflammatory medicines and vitamin E, to reduce bruising and bleeding. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
During treatment, a series of small injections is placed in the skin across the area that sweats; the FDA label describes 10 to 15 injection points per underarm, about 1 to 2 cm apart, after the sweating area is mapped. The appointment is booked for 30 minutes. Many people describe a quick pinch with each injection. Sophie performs all injectable procedures at Sol Luna.
What are the side effects and risks?
The AAD lists the most common side effects as pain, bruising, headache, muscle soreness or weakness where injected, and mild itching. In the FDA underarm trials, the most frequent reactions (3 to 10% of adults) included injection site pain and bleeding, sweating in other areas, infection, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, headache, fever, neck or back pain, itching and anxiety.
The BOTOX label also notes that hand muscle weakness can occur when the palms are treated, and eyelid drooping when the face is treated. All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning that the effect may spread from the injection area and cause symptoms hours to weeks later.
