First-Time Botox in Boca Raton: What to Expect Before, During and After

Your first time getting Botox in Boca Raton at Sol Luna Aesthetics starts with a $125 consultation, a medical history review and clinical photos. If you treat the same day, the fee goes toward treatment. Most single areas are booked as 15 minute appointments, and wrinkle relaxers typically take 3 to 7 days to settle.

First-timers usually want to know what to do beforehand, how the visit goes and what is normal afterward. This guide from Sophie Lanter, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, a doctorally prepared, board-certified family nurse practitioner and the founder of Sol Luna Aesthetics, walks through a first visit step by step. A DNP is a doctoral degree in nursing, not a medical (MD or DO) degree. For prices by area, read Botox Cost in Boca Raton.

What should you do before your first Botox appointment?

Before your visit:

  • Hold your appointment with a card. Sol Luna's office policies require a valid credit card on file for every appointment. Cancellations or reschedules with less than 24 hours' notice, and no-shows, carry a $125 fee.

  • Complete the medical history form. A complete and accurate medical history form is required for every new patient before treatment.

  • List everything you take. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises telling your provider about all medicines, including pain relievers, blood thinners and aspirin, plus herbs, vitamins and minerals. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask the doctor who prescribed it.

  • Share your treatment history. The Medication Guide in the FDA prescribing information for Botox Cosmetic asks you to mention any botulinum toxin product in the last four months, facial surgery, drooping eyelids, bleeding problems or a disease affecting the muscles and nerves.

  • Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding. The same Medication Guide states it is not known whether Botox Cosmetic can harm an unborn baby or passes into breast milk.

  • Leave room before big events. Results take several days to show, and a bruise, if one appears, lasts about a week (AAD). Book well ahead of a wedding or trip.

What happens at your first consultation at Sol Luna Aesthetics?

Every new patient starts with a $125 consultation, and Sophie performs all injectable procedures at Sol Luna. She will:

  1. Review your medical history, medicines and allergies.

  2. Take clinical photos, which Sol Luna requires for medical documentation and progress tracking.

  3. Look at how your muscles move when you frown, raise your brows and smile.

  4. Talk through what bothers you and what a wrinkle relaxer can and cannot change.

  5. Build a treatment plan, including the areas to treat and the product to use.

Sol Luna offers five brands: Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify. The product and dose are chosen at this visit, and units do not convert between brands. If you have a cow's milk protein allergy, say so: the FDA label for Dysport lists it as a reason not to use that product.

If you treat the same day, the $125 goes toward your treatment; if not, you leave with your plan. The AAD suggests asking who will inject you, what results to expect and whether you have a higher risk of complications. Our guide on how to choose a med spa in Boca Raton lists more questions.

How does the injection appointment go?

Sol Luna's wrinkle relaxer page lists most single areas, such as a Brow Lift or Lip Flip, as 15 minute appointments, and the booking menu lists the Triple Threat (forehead, frown lines and crow's feet) at 30 minutes.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a very thin needle places small amounts of product into specific muscles, and injections usually take less than 15 minutes. Crow's feet usually need two to three injections; furrows above the brow can take five or more.

Many people describe a brief pinch with each injection, and mild redness or small bumps can appear at the injection points, as our Botox wrinkle reduction guide explains. The AAD notes that most people return to everyday activities right away and can apply makeup after leaving, without pressing or rubbing it in.

What are the aftercare do's and don'ts after your first Botox treatment?

Do:

  • Follow the written aftercare instructions you receive at Sol Luna.

  • Call the clinic with any question.

Don't:

  • Rub, massage or press on treated areas. The ASPS notes this can cause the toxin to move to another area of the face and lead to temporary weakness or drooping.

  • Work out or lift heavy items for at least two hours (AAD).

  • Use saunas, hot yoga or other intense heat in the first few hours, or longer if your instructions say so.

  • Drive or operate machinery if you notice muscle weakness, vision problems, drooping eyelids or dizziness, which the FDA Medication Guide says can occur hours to weeks after treatment.

When should you follow up and plan your next treatment?

Judge your result once it has settled, which can take up to about a week. If the two sides look different after that, or you are unsure whether something is normal, call (561) 576-4144. Whether an adjustment is appropriate is a clinical decision made by your provider.

The AAD says results for lines and wrinkles last about 3 to 4 months, sometimes longer, and that you can have another treatment when lines return. Product choice also plays a role; the Daxxify vs Botox longevity guide and How Long Does Botox Last? cover timing in more detail. Results vary from person to person.

What are the risks of Botox for first-time patients?

Wrinkle relaxers are prescription medicines. According to the AAD, side effects tend to be mild and temporary, and most are caused by the injections themselves:

  • Swelling, redness and soreness

  • Bruising, which lasts about a week if it happens

  • Mild headache (uncommon)

  • Weakness in a nearby muscle, causing a temporarily droopy brow or eyelid (rare)

In clinical trials listed on the FDA label for Botox Cosmetic, eyelid drooping was reported in 3% of people treated for frown lines, and headache (9%) and brow drooping (2%) in people treated for forehead lines.

All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning that the effect may spread from the injection area and cause symptoms hours to weeks later. Get medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, breathing or speaking after treatment. The FDA label also states that Botox Cosmetic should not be used where there is an infection at the planned injection site.
