Masseter Botox in Boca Raton: Jaw Slimming, Clenching and Cost
Updated: 2 days ago
Masseter Botox relaxes the large chewing muscles at the angle of the jaw. It is used off-label to soften a wide, square lower face and, for some people, jaw tension from clenching. At Sol Luna Aesthetics in Boca Raton, Masseter Tox (Jaw Slimming) is listed at $600, and every plan starts with a consultation.
Jaw slimming is a common question about wrinkle relaxers, even though it has nothing to do with wrinkles. This guide from Sophie Lanter, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, a doctorally prepared, board-certified family nurse practitioner and the founder of Sol Luna Aesthetics, explains how masseter treatment works, what it costs, what the research says about side effects and when jaw symptoms need a different kind of evaluation. A DNP is a doctoral degree in nursing, not a medical (MD or DO) degree.
What is masseter Botox?
The masseters are the thick muscles on each side of the face that close the jaw when you chew or clench. When they are large or very active, the lower face can look wider or more square, and some people notice tightness or fatigue in the jaw.
Masseter treatment places a neurotoxin, the same type of product used for frown lines, directly into these muscles. As the muscle relaxes and is used less forcefully, it can gradually become smaller. Sol Luna's wrinkle relaxer menu describes Masseter Tox as a treatment that relaxes the masseter muscles to slim the lower face and ease jaw tension. "Botox" is often used as a general name. Sol Luna Aesthetics offers five wrinkle relaxer brands: Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify. The brand and dose for your masseters are decided at your consultation, and units do not convert from one brand to another.
Is masseter Botox FDA-approved?
No. The FDA label for Botox Cosmetic lists four cosmetic uses: frown lines, crow's feet, forehead lines and neck (platysma) bands. The FDA labels for Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify do not list masseter treatment either. Injecting the masseter for jaw slimming or clenching is an off-label use with any of these brands. Off-label use is common in aesthetic medicine, but it means the dose and technique come from the injector's training and published studies rather than the product label, so the experience of the person treating you matters.
Who might be a candidate for masseter Botox?
You may be a candidate if:
Your lower face looks wide or square because of muscle bulk at the jaw angle
You can feel the muscle firm up at the back of the jaw when you clench
You want a softer jawline without filler or surgery
You notice jaw tightness from clenching and have discussed your symptoms with your dentist or physician
Masseter treatment is not a substitute for a medical or dental work-up. Jaw pain, clicking, locking, trouble opening your mouth, headaches or worn teeth can have many causes, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and dental problems. Tell Sophie about these symptoms at your consultation, and expect to be referred for evaluation when that is the right step.
A wide jaw is also not always muscle. Bone structure and fat play a role, and a masseter injection only changes the muscle. Your consultation includes an exam to sort out which applies to you.
How much does masseter Botox cost in Boca Raton?
Sol Luna Aesthetics lists lower face and neck neurotoxin treatments by area, not by unit:
Treatment at Sol Luna | What it targets | Listed price |
Masseter Tox (Jaw Slimming) | Masseter muscles at the jaw angle | $600 |
Nefertiti | Jawline definition and neck bands | $300 (booking menu) |
Neck, Vertical Bands | Platysma bands on the front of the neck | $500 |
Neck, Horizontal Bands | Horizontal neck lines | $500 (booking menu) |
Chin Dimpling | "Orange peel" texture on the chin | $200 |
RBF (Resting Frown Face) Correction | Downturned corners of the mouth | $200 |
A $150 surcharge applies to all men's wrinkle relaxer treatments, because men typically need about 1.5 times the amount of neurotoxin. New patients start with a $125 consultation, which goes toward the cost of treatment if you treat the same day, per Sol Luna's office policies. What happens during a masseter Botox appointment?
A typical visit at Sol Luna Aesthetics includes:
A review of your medical history, medicines, allergies and any jaw or dental symptoms.
Clinical photos of your face from the front and sides.
An exam where you clench so the edges of each muscle can be felt and mapped.
A plan for dose and placement on each side, which may differ if your face is not symmetrical.
A few injections into each masseter, followed by aftercare instructions and a follow-up plan.
When will you see results, and how long do they last?
Two changes happen on different timelines. Sol Luna's FAQ notes that wrinkle relaxers typically take 3 to 7 days to settle, so you may notice less clenching force within the first week or so. A slimmer look depends on the muscle itself getting smaller, so any change in jaw contour builds gradually over the following weeks.
The effect wears off as nerve signals to the muscle return, so ongoing results require repeat treatments. How long yours lasts and how often to return depend on your muscle, your dose and the product, and are discussed at your consultation. Results vary from person to person.
What are the risks of masseter Botox?
Masseter treatment is a medical procedure. In a published series of 2,036 masseter treatment sessions, the most common effect was a temporary decrease in chewing strength (30% of sessions). Less common effects included:
Bruising (2.5%)
Headache (0.58%)
Paradoxical bulging, where part of the muscle bulges when you clench (0.49%)
A sunken look below the cheekbones (0.44%)
Sagging (0.20%)
Limited or uneven smile (0.15%)
These figures come from one clinic and may not match every practice. The study's authors stress placing injections within a defined safe zone of the muscle to lower these risks.
All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning that the effect may spread beyond the injection area hours to weeks after treatment. Get medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, breathing or speaking. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neuromuscular condition. Can masseter Botox be combined with filler or other treatments?
Yes, for some people. Relaxing the masseter changes the width of the lower face, while filler can add structure along the jawline or chin. Sol Luna's filler menu lists Jawline Enhancement at $1,400 and Chin Balancing as priced at consultation. Combining them is part of facial balancing, and whether both make sense for you is decided at your consultation.
Frequently asked questions
How much is masseter Botox at Sol Luna Aesthetics?
Masseter Tox (Jaw Slimming) is listed at $600 on the Sol Luna Aesthetics wrinkle relaxer menu in Boca Raton. A $150 surcharge applies to men's wrinkle relaxer treatments, and new patients start with a $125 consultation.
Is masseter Botox the same as TMJ treatment?
No. Masseter Botox relaxes the jaw muscle and is an off-label use. Jaw pain, clicking or locking can have many causes, so these symptoms should be evaluated by a dentist or physician. Share them with your provider at your consultation.
Can masseter Botox change my smile?
It can, though it is uncommon. In one published series of 2,036 treatments, a limited smile was reported after 0.15% of sessions. Careful placement within the muscle helps lower this risk.
How long does it take to see jaw slimming?
You may notice less clenching force within the first week or so. Visible slimming is gradual because it depends on the muscle getting smaller over the following weeks. Results vary from person to person.
Will chewing feel different after masseter Botox?
It may. A temporary decrease in chewing strength was the most common effect in a published series of masseter treatments, reported after 30% of sessions. Tough or chewy foods may feel like more work for a while.
